“Federer changed the ranking system to protect himself”

Roger Federer continues to recover from knee surgery he underwent last February and that has left him without playing a large part of the 2020 season. Despite his absence due to injury, Federer remains in the Top-10 of the ATP ranking thanks to the points achieved in 2019 and at the Australian Open this season.

A fact that the vice president of the German Tennis Federation, Dirk Hordoff, did not like at all, that in statements to the 'Quiet Please' podcast on Tennisnet.com He accused the Swiss of changing the ranking system to benefit. “Federer changed the ranking method to protect himself. That is very irresponsible and wrong. In my opinion I think he took advantage of his position on the Players Council. It should be noted that without the change in the ranking system, Federer would not even be in the top 50. “

Fedrer currently appears in the classification in fifth position with 6,630 points, of which only 720 correspond to the 2020 season after reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open, the only official tournament he has played this year, while the remaining 5,910 points were achieved in the 2019 season.

Hordoff also charged hard against the players due to the fact that last year's points were also maintained in the ATP Finals despite the presence of different players from year to year. “How do you hold ATP Finals points for two years? That's terrible.”

The leader also charged for this reason against Roger Federer and also against Rafa Nadal, since both tennis players are on the Players Council. “It is very strange that the Players Council began to support before the ATP Finals a rule change so that this event counts twice for the ranking. Especially by Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, who are part of the Players Council. I don't see a logical reason for this decision and I think they don't represent the majority of players. “
