MADRID, 10 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Formula 1 has condemned the “unacceptable” homophobic and racist comments some fans have made about others at the Austrian Grand Prix, saying it will speak to the people who reported the incidents to take action alongside the event’s promoter and security.
“We have been made aware that some fans have been the subject of completely unacceptable comments by others at the Austrian Grand Prix. We take these matters very seriously, we have discussed them with the promoter and event security, and we will speak to those reported the incidents. This type of behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” F1 said in a statement.
During the weekend at the Red Bull Ring, several fans present at the circuit denounced on social networks that they had suffered homophobic and racist insults in the stands and around the venue.
Also the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton suffered the unfortunate behavior of some fans; His crash during Friday’s qualifying session was greeted with cheers and celebrations from some of the 50,000 Dutch Max Verstappen (Red Bull) fans in the stands.
Hamilton called the joy of those fans over his accident “mind-boggling.” “You should never be happy about someone’s injury or crash. It shouldn’t have happened at Silverstone, although obviously it wasn’t an accident, and it shouldn’t have happened here,” he said, recalling Verstappen’s boos at the British Grand Prix and the celebrations when he spun during the qualifying session.
