The AS Saint-Étienne club has been penalized six points, three of them suspended, in the coming season and will have to play six games behind closed doors due to the incidents that occurred on May 29 in the match against Auxerre.
The violent images of that match circulated on all televisions. Numerous club fans took to the field with sticks and flares that they threw at the players.
The French Professional Football League considers that the disturbances were serious enough to sanction the green team with six penalty points next season, three of them suspended pending reoffending, the League announced on Thursday.
In addition, its stadium, the Geoffroy-Guichard, will not be able to host the public in the first six games played there in the 2022-2023 season, which begins in early August.
The club has announced that it will not appeal the sanction given the seriousness of the acts.
“The club calls for everyone’s responsibility so that these unspeakable acts are not repeated at Geoffroy-Guichard”, published the team’s management, which recalled that these actions put some people in danger, including children and disabled.
“Disseminated throughout the world, these images have strongly damaged the image of the club,” added AS Saint-Étienne in a statement.
