“Every year I have to measure my aorta”

Sonsoles Ónega has revealed a personal detail about his health: He suffers from a genetic malformation that requires him to perform annual checkups of his aorta to prevent possible serious complications.

During the charity event organized by Bodegas Protos, which this year supports the UAPO Foundation in its fight against cancer, Sonsoles shared with journalist Antonio Diéguez from the magazine Hello how this diagnosis has changed your perspective on life and the importance you give to personal and family care. “With health, we do everything,” declared the presenter, visibly committed to the solidarity cause.

Heart disease detected by chance

Nine years ago, during a routine medical check-up, he was detected to have a bicuspid valve, a congenital malformation that affects the structure of the heart. This relatively common condition can lead to more serious problems such as excessive dilation of the aorta. “Every year I have to measure my aorta in case there is excessive dilation. Although it would be a very sweet death, because you fall, it hits you and you die right there.“, she commented with the humor that characterizes her, but without downplaying the importance of the situation.

Despite the apparent severity of the diagnosis, Sonsoles assures that he leads a normal life, although with special care. “I am very aware of the need to review yourself. In my family we are very hypochondriacs, and that also helps us review ourselves a lot. “It’s the right thing to do, especially women, who sometimes forget about our own reviews.”

A year full of challenges and successes

On a professional level, Sonsoles celebrates a 2024 full of achievements. His television program has been consolidated, and his novel The maid’s daughters It has been a bestseller. However, the winner of the Planeta Award recognizes that it has been a demanding year: “Promoting the novel was hard, especially with the trips to Latin America. That feeling of always going at full speed has made me reflect. Although I don’t know how to do it any other way, on TV we leave our horns“.

Despite the frenetic pace, Sonsoles continues to move forward with new literary projects. “I have just submitted the draft of my new novel, and I am making corrections. I really want to return to bookstores next year.” Personally, she seems happy and serene. His children, whom he defines as “good and studious”, are his greatest pride. Furthermore, her relationship with Juan, a financier with whom she has been with for more than a year, is going through a moment of stability and happiness. “We love each other a lot and we are great,” he said.

Plans for Christmas

With the holidays approaching, Sonsoles plans to take a break to enjoy his family and one of his great passions: writing. “I work until the 27th, but then I will take a few days to be with my children and dedicate myself to writing. Not looking at the clock is what relaxes me the most.”

The celebrations will be in Madrid, with his family and with Juan. “He is already one more in our family,” he commented between laughs. There will be no shortage of traditional dishes on the table, such as the lamb prepared by his mother and the Polvorones, which he confessed to be his downfall.

When asked what she would ask of Santa Claus or the Three Wise Men, Sonsoles responded with a smile: “A little time to take better care of myself and open up the library at home. I am compulsive about buying books, and I couldn’t fit any more.”

Purposes for 2025

Looking ahead to next year, Sonsoles is clear about its main purpose: “Stop smoking. Take care of myself and pamper myself more. Listen to me more.” However, he does not plan to get married in the short term, although he does not rule out anything in the future: “Never say I will not drink this water. At the moment, there is no need.”

Reflection on television wars

Sonsoles also spoke about rivalries between television programs, a topic he knows well after having starred in a confrontation over ratings with Ana Rosa Quintana. “Competition is healthy and good between chains, but I don’t like fierce wars between colleagues. “This profession is narrow and short, and personal attacks don’t help us at all.”

With this philosophy, Sonsoles Ónega continues to demonstrate its strength and optimism, facing each challenge with determination. Your genetic malformation is just more proof that, with prevention and self-care, you can lead a full life. For Sonsoles, health and love continue to be his greatest reasons to toast.
