The Euroleague announced this Tuesday that in its attempt to continue improving the regulations of its two competitions, the Euroleague and the EuroCup, it has added and modified several rules for this 2023-2024 season that starts this week, including those for reviews.
This way, coaches will have two options, instead of one, to request a review of a play during a game, although one of them must be used in the first 38 minutes of the game or they will lose it. Additionally, to help speed up games, referees will now be able to initiate a foul review only in the last two minutes of regulation or overtime.
Similarly, two new types of decisions will now be open for review: one will be whether or not a player was fouled at the time of shooting; and the second whether or not the shot clock requires a reset in situations where there is a review to determine if the ball touched the rim. In both cases, a coach can use a ‘challenge’, while referees can only initiate such reviews in the last two minutes of a match or in the last two minutes of extra time.
Finally, any player or team personnel who leaves the bench during an on-field altercation and does not actively participate in the incident will not be disqualified. This means that the referees will be able to review the images and confirm whether the player or staff member was involved or not.
