The Italian team, the new European champion after beating England this Sunday in the final of the European Championship at Wembley, celebrated his triumph this Monday by touring the center of Rome aboard an open-top bus before thousands of fans who took to the streets to express their gratitude.
After being received by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and by the Prime Minister, Mario Draghi, Italy boarded an open-top bus at Palazzo Chigi and roamed the Roman streets towards the Parco dei Principi hotel, where the players will sleep tonight before leaving the concentration.
The “azzurra” selection obtained the approval of the competent authorities after several hours of negotiations to be able to celebrate the title with their fans, something that raised concerns due to the coronavirus pandemic and the large number of people who would gather to celebrate, many of them without masks.
The most active in the “azzurro” group were Captain Giorgio Chiellini, who showed the cup to his fans, and Leonardo Bonucci, one of the great protagonists of the victory against England, by scoring the 1-1 goal and the penalty in the final shoot-out.
Italy, trained by Roberto Mancini, conquered this Sunday the second European Championship in its history, after 1968. This trophy joins the four World Cups won in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006.
