Ester Somaza: “I'm still on a cloud, living a dream”

MADRID, 7 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The player of the Spanish handball team Ester Somaza assured that she is still “on a cloud” after making her debut in an absolute World Cup with the 'Guerreras', in a match against Ukraine, and continuing to have weight in the last victory over Argentina (30-23) in the Main Round of the World Cup event.

“For me, being with the national team is a dream and since I was very little I thought about whether this moment would one day come and in the end, well, look, I have been given the opportunity. I think I am not aware, because I am not aware of where I am. “I continue living a dream as if on a cloud,” he said in statements provided by the RFEBM.

Against Argentina, the Catalan full-back went from less to more in her contribution to the game and the national victory. But her dream debut was against Ukraine. “In the second half I felt a little more comfortable, more involved in the game. At the beginning it is true that I had some mistakes, perhaps because of the nerves of the debut, to start playing. But well, I think the second part was better and I'm very happy about it,” she said.

“The team is prepared, some small things need to be adjusted, but I believe we can do it perfectly and if we are focused and playing our game it will work out, for sure,” said the KH-7 Granollers player, born in 2004 in Les Franqueses del Valles.

At 19 years old, last week she was the big surprise on the Warriors' list for this World Cup in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, when she was called up by Ambros Martín to make up for the last-minute loss of Shandy Barbosa. A call that came to her just a few hours before she achieved, with the Junior Warriors, qualification for the 2024 World Championship in the North Macedonia category.

She debuted with the Guerreras on March 3 of this year at just 18 years old, in the Batalha International Tournament. That day, Spain won 35-11 with three goals from the young Catalan winger, who scored 100 goals in 19 international matches as a youth player; an average of 5.26 per match.

Ester Somaza is the youngest Warrior in this Scandinavian World Cup, where she arrives after shining with Granollers so far in the Iberdrola Guerreras League. Last year, in her debut in the domestic elite, she scored 94 goals in 28 games and 15 goals in a Queen's Cup in which she was a finalist.

It made its debut in this World Cup on the second day of the group stage, in Spain's 30-20 victory against Ukraine at the Arena Nord in the Danish city of Frederikshavn. A clash in which the Granollers player scored three goals and added quality minutes in Ambros Martín's first line, in what was her debut in a major tournament.
