England signs the biggest win in a European Championship and reaffirms itself as favorite

MADRID, 11 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The England team has reiterated its favoritism to win the Women’s European Championship and has achieved its passage to the quarterfinals after achieving this Monday against Norway (8-0) the biggest win in the history of a final phase of the continental tournament, while Austria has added their first win in Group A against bottom side Northern Ireland (2-0).

The hosts, who had already beaten the Austrians in their debut (1-0), secured first place in Group A and their ticket to the knockout rounds with one day left in the group stage, all after overwhelming the Scandinavian team at the Brighton & Hove Community Stadium in a historic match.

A penalty goal from forward Georgia Stanway after 12 minutes opened the scoring festival for the ‘Lionesses’, who took advantage of the Norwegians’ defensive fragility to go into the break 6-0, the largest result in a first half in history of the women’s European Championships.

Arsenal striker Bethany Mead and Manchester City striker Ellen White, on two occasions each, and Lauren Hemp left the match sentenced at 41 minutes for Sarina Wiegman’s. After the break, Alessia Russo increased the lead coming off the bench and Mead completed her hat-trick in the 81st minute.

For their part, Austria picked up their first EURO points after beating an almost hopeless Northern Ireland (2-0). Katharina Schiechtl opened the account in the 19th minute after a free kick from the Central European team, and Katharina Naschenweng waited until the 88th minute to seal the victory for Irene Fuhrmann’s women.
