The British Bernie Ecclestone, former owner of the Formula 1 World Championship, is clear that although his compatriot Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) wins his eighth world title this year, “at all” he will be able to be above the German Michael Schumacher, while
“No, not at all. In fact, I’m surprised Lewis didn’t say it earlier this year: ‘I’m retiring, I don’t want to win more races or world championships than Michael,'” Ecclestone said in an interview broadcast on German channel RTL.
On the other hand, he showed his happiness that this season the F-1 will be decided, except for surprise, in the last race between the Dutch Max Verstappen and the current champion. “It is a fight that we have been waiting for seven or eight years, finally a competition again, that is what people want when they see Formula 1 or any sport. They want competitiveness,” he remarked.
Ecclestone also compared this Hamilton-Verstappen duel to the legendary showdown in the late 1980s between Brazilian Ayrton Senna and Frenchman Alain Prost. “Both are very competitive in their own way. They have a different style, a different way of approaching things and that adapts to each race,” he said.
