The Princess Eleanor continues to demonstrate its ability to adapt in the demanding environment of the training ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano, which this Friday docked in the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife after a six-day voyage from Cádiz. The arrival of the emblematic ship was received with a warm welcome, marked by ten ceremonial cannon shots and the enthusiasm of the citizens, who cheered with an emotional “Long live Spain, Long live the King, Long live Tenerife!“.
A weekend of rest and learning
After intense days of classes and maneuvers, Leonor and her classmates will have the opportunity this weekend to relax and explore the Tenerife city. According to the ship’s commander, Luis Carreras-Presas do Campo, in addition to cultural activities, the midshipmen will enjoy free time to discover the charms of Tenerife, including visits to the Almeyda Military Museum and the historic Palace of the General Captaincy of Canary Islands.
Both places will offer the young sailors a tour of the military and naval history of Spain, while the city itself will allow them to taste the rich local cuisine, such as the famous wrinkled potatoes, sancocho or the sweet frangollo, of which Leonor, a great lover of traditional bread and desserts, you could become a fan.
The routine on board the Juan Sebastián de Elcano does not let up. Leonor begins her day before seven in the morning with theoretical classes and maneuvers on deck. But despite the intensity of the program, he always finds time to relax. His afternoons are dedicated to reading, sports and, thanks to the boat’s WiFi connection, keeping in touch with his family.
This is the 62nd visit of Juan Sebastián de Elcano to the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a key point on the Spanish routes to America. Commander Carreras highlighted the importance of this stop, not only for its historical value, but also as an essential stage in the practical training of midshipmen. “This is when they really start to form.“he explained.
In addition, the training ship will open its doors to the public during the weekend, offering visitors the opportunity to get up close and personal with this jewel of the Spanish Navy in the morning and afternoon.
On Monday, the Juan Sebastián de Elcano will set sail for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, continuing a journey that will take it to Brazil. Meanwhile, Princess Leonor continues to demonstrate that, between getting up early, maneuvers and cultural activities, there is always a time to enjoy, learn and, of course, take advantage of the “little moments” to chat with the family from the high seas.
