When Inter signed Dzeko this summer, few believed the Bosnian could perform at the highest level at a demanding club that needed a top scorer following the departure of star Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea. At 35, the former City and Roma, among others, seemed to be back and his incorporation to the Nerazzurri ranks was seen as a simple patch with which to cover the position of nine in the face of the lack of economic resources of the champion of the Serie A. Nothing is further from the truth. Dzeko is performing at a superlative level and is, after Inmbolile, the top scorer in the Italian league in this first third of the season.
His figures are spectacular. Dzeko has participated in twelve games this season and has eight goals (seven in Serie A and one in the Champions League) and three assists in just 1,000 minutes. Some numbers that are above those achieved by his predecessor, Lukaku, at Chelsea, who has four goals and one assist in eleven games played with the blues.
Dzeko’s performance is totally unexpected after last season hit a slump in his game with Roma. With the giallorossi team he played 38 games in 2020/21 in which he scored 13 goals, a figure that he will probably surpass at Inter sooner rather than later seeing his current form. His last goal, against Juventus last Sunday in the Derby in Italy, was key for Inter to achieve a point against a vecchia signora who was thrown into the game and that keeps the Nerazzurri in the Champions League positions.
