Dutch rider Victor Steeman, of the MTM Kawasaki team, died after suffering a serious accident last Saturday during Race 1 of the Portuguese Grand Prix of the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship, held at the Algarve International Circuit, the World Championship confirmed on Tuesday. of Superbikes (WSBK).
Victor Steeman, 22, was involved in a multi-driver incident at Turn 14 of the track that led to the red flag. The pilot was treated on the track itself and at the circuit’s medical center before being transferred by helicopter in critical condition with polytrauma and a head injury to Faro Hospital where, despite all the medical efforts, he was unable to overcome the serious injuries.
“Something that one is always afraid of as a father of a motorcycle racer has happened. Our Victor was unable to win this last race. Despite the unbearable loss and pain, we are extremely proud to share with everyone that our hero, through his passing, he was able to save five other people by donating his organs. We would like to thank everyone for the way they have lived with us over the last few days. We will miss Victor greatly,” a statement from the Dutchman’s family said.
Steeman was enjoying an excellent campaign in the championship and arrived in Portugal with the possibility of taking the title after having added four wins and five podiums. “The FIM family, the Dorna Group and the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve send their deepest condolences to Victor’s family, friends, team and loved ones,” they lamented from WSBK.
