Following his fourth season as manager of the Houston Astros, who fell one game short of winning the AL Championship Series on Monday night against the Texas Rangers, Baker, 74, announced his resignation at a press conference.

“I would first like to say thank to Jim Crane and his family for providing me this opportunity throughout the last four years,” Baker said on Thursday. “I am incredibly honored to be this ballclub’s skipper.

We appreciate the fans’ undying passion. I have never encountered love quite as it has throughout my stay in Houston.

“I express my gratitude to all of my teammates and instructors for their selfless sacrifices made during our numerous attempts to win a World Series.

You guys gave me all you had every day, and that’s all I could ever ask for. I’d like to thank my family and friends one last time.

I cannot express enough how much I appreciate all of the affection and backing that you have given me throughout the years.

A club tarnished by a scandal involving sign-stealing, which ultimately resulted in the suspensions of manager AJ Hinch, bench coach Alex Cora, and GM Jeff Luhnow, had some shine returned thanks to Baker.

“When we hired Dusty a year ago, we thought he was the proper person to guide this club through a tumultuous period. And we were definitely right,” Crane stated.

“Undoubtedly, Dusty has helped us succeed on the field, and he has had a huge positive influence on the players we have, our business, and our community.
