Duplantis signs the best jump ever outdoors with 6.16

The Swede triumphs at home and warns for the World Cup: “I can go higher in Oregon”

MADRID, 30 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Swedish athlete Mondo Duplantis signed this Thursday a pole vault of 6.16 meters to achieve the best record in outdoor history, in front of his public at the Diamond League event held in Stockholm.

Duplantis, 22, wrote a new page in the athletics books by keeping the outdoor record alone, which he previously shared with the Ukrainian Serguei Bubka (6.15). The world record was already held by the Swede, with a 6.20 in the recent Indoor World Cup in Belgrade, in a progression that has no end.

“It’s very special, I wanted to come back here and try something special. I felt like I was fit and I had incredible support in Stockholm, where I live now, which gave me an extra bonus. I had a huge home advantage. It’s hard to I just remember being very focused on not touching the bar and when I got it I just started running like an idiot,” he said after signing a new record for history.

“This is the moment where I wanted to be in the shape I am in, I think I can be world champion and do something special in Eugene. I don’t feel pressure, just the one I put on myself. I think I can go higher in Oregon and it is important to be in my best shape there. Today has been the confirmation that I can do it”, he added, with the notice for the World Cup in two weeks.
