Didier Drogba will not be able to see his dream of presiding over the Ivory Coast Football Federation come true. The legendary scorer from Chelsea and Marseille stood for election to the body but this Saturday he was left out of the race by not passing the first round of the elections.

Drogba fell far behind his rivals, Idriss Diallo and Sory Diabaté, two local football heavyweights. Diallo came first with 59 votes out of 130 cast ahead of Diabaté, who received 50 votes. Drogba finished third with just 21 votes.
As there is no absolute majority, a second round must be held between Idriss Diallo, FIF’s top leader in the 2000s, and Sory Diabaté, another executive of the institution.
With wide support in the population and, according to several observers, by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Fifa, Drogba failed to convince the presidents of the Ivorian clubs who constituted the overwhelming majority of voters.
Drogba has been criticized in recent weeks for not knowing enough about local football and for not dedicating himself fully to the election campaign.
