Double surprise USA: Brady throws Kerber and Rogers, Kvitova

He pointed ways and he showed it a few weeks ago in Lexington, where he lifted the first WTA title and this Sunday, Jennifer Brady (25 years and 41st in the world) has consolidated her alternative on the circuit with a weighty win at the US Open against Angelique Kerber, champion in 2016 and former world number one: 6-2 and 6-4 in 1h: 28. His victory places him for the first time in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam, a high round in which Will face Moscow-born Kazakh Yulia Putintseva (leader of the women's tournament in breaks with 23), who beat the Croatian Petra Martic in a somewhat tedious, long match due to the medical interruptions requested by the two players (6-3, 2-6 and 6-4 in 2h: 37).

Brady, with a power that surpassed Kerber in the first set, showed that he has serve (he has 22 aces in the tournament) and blows to overwhelm any opponent and if it hadn't been for some discomfort in the left leg for which she was treated in the second set, she could have closed her success even earlier. With 25 winners and only 14 unforced errors, she closed the door to the German, one of the players who best defends herself on the entire circuit and with greater stability in exchanges. But the drive of the American did not allow him to extend the points. Brady entered the game with the fewest lost games of all the eighth finalists (14) and consequently without losing a set. And so it goes on.

Rogers kicks off Kvitova

Even more surprising than Brady's victory was that of his compatriot Shelby Rogers, world number 93 because she was stopped for a long time because of an injury, against Petra Kvitova, eighth favorite and also former number like Kerber. The 27-year-old American tennis player won by 7-6 (5), 6-3 and 7-6 (6) and he showed nerves of steel in the two playoffs that tipped the balance in his favor. Kvitova harassed her opponent with many raises to the net (27/38) and 58 winners, but she also committed 35 unforced errors and seven double faults. Rogers had already beaten the Czech in a major, it was in the round of 16 at Roland Garros 2016. In the quarterfinals, Shelby will face the Japanese Naomi Osaka, who was superior to the Estonian Anett Kontaveit, whom she won in two sets (6 -3 and 6-4). A week ago, in their previous match at the Western & b Southern Open, Osaka also won, who aspires to repeat the title in the Big Apple (he raised it in 2018).

Results of the day.
