Double for Spain in the long-distance World Cup: silver for Antonio Benito and bronze for Gurutze Frades

MADRID, 7 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish triathlon team finished the Mutideporte Ibiza 2023 World Championship on the podium this Sunday, with silver and bronze in the long-distance World Cup won by Antonio Benito and Gurutze Frades, leaving Spain second in the medal table.

Benito, who was making his debut in the specialty, lost the gold in the last kilometer ahead of the Frenchman Clement Mignon. “I put myself first at the end of the first lap of the race on foot and I opened up to a minute but little by little the Frenchman was cutting me and he caught me in the last kilometer. I gave it my all, that’s why I’m happy”, confessed the Manchego in statements provided by the Spanish Triathlon Federation.

In the female category, Gurutze Frades got her first medal in a World Championship in Ibiza. “I had prepared it well, I came in shape and things have turned out very well. It has not been an easy race, it has been harder than I thought. This has been my seventh world championship and after so many years this medal tastes good to me bronze,” he confessed. The gold went to the French Marjolaine Pierre and the silver to the Swedish Sara Svensk.

This Sunday the Ibiza 2023 Multisport World Championship came to an end, an event that has gone down in history by breaking the record of international registrations, with 62 different nationalities representing the five continents. Spain finished second in the medal table with two golds, one silver and two bronzes, while France was first with three golds, one silver and three bronzes.

“These World Cups were born with three objectives that I think we have more than achieved. They had to be the recovery of Multisport after the pandemic, it had to be the World Cup of commitment and we have shown with the environmental initiatives that we have carried out that sport cannot stop being a tool that carries the flag of sustainability and has also been the People’s World Cup, because we have offered all the athletes who have gone through this championship three iconic places on this island”, declared José Hidalgo, president of the Spanish Triathlon Federation.

“In addition, I would add the innovation of the use of technology applied to the service of the athlete with artificial intelligence in a worldwide triathlon event, which has allowed them to be able to offer them their personalized videos,” he added.
