Djokovic: “Wimbledon inspired me to play tennis”

The ceremony had laughter between ‘Nole’ and Kyrgios: “I never thought I would tell you so many nice things”

MADRID, 10 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic confessed a strong emotion for lifting the Wimbledon trophy again for the fourth consecutive edition, charging again with his 21st ‘Grand Slam’, after a disputed final against a Nick Kyrgios whom he praised.

“I have no words to explain what this tournament and this trophy mean to me. It is the tournament with the most history, the one with the most prestige around the world. For me, it has always been the most special tournament, the one that motivated and inspired me to play tennis,” said the Belgrade player at the trophy award ceremony.

The seven-time champion in London exchanged compliments with the Australian on the track, despite friction on and off the track. “I never thought I would tell you so many nice things, I think it will be the beginning of a beautiful relationship,” he said.

“My first memory of tennis is seeing Sampras win the final in 1992, when I was four and a half years old. That day I asked my parents to buy me a racket. It gains more and more meaning. I feel very grateful to be here holding this trophy”, added a ‘Nole’ who savored glory in a tough year.

After being deported from Australia and not being able to compete in the first ‘big’ of the season and stopped at Roland Garros by Rafa Nadal, the Serbian was reunited in what is his garden. In his first Grand Slam final, Kyrgios showed his frustration at letting the option slip away. “He is a bit of God, I think I played well,” said the Australian in his speech.

“It’s hard to find comfort after a loss like this, but you’ve shown why you deserve to be one of the best players in the world,” Djokovic said looking at Kyrgios. “I wish you the best. I respect you, I think you are an incredible athlete and a huge talent. Everything is starting to fall into place for you and I have no doubt that we will see you a lot in the final rounds of the ‘Grand Slam'”, he finished. .
