Djokovic, quarterfinalist at Wimbledon after beating Poland’s Hurkacz

MADRID, 10 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, second seeded, has qualified for the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon tournament, the third Grand Slam of the year and which takes place at the All England Club in London, after beating the Pole Hubert Hurkacz in four sets , by 7-6 (6), 7-6 (6), 5-7 and 6-4, in a match that needed two days to finish.

The second-seeded Wimbledon suffered heavily to defeat Hurkacz, the 17th seed and consummate grass-court specialist who was a semi-finalist in 2021. The Pole hit 33 aces and only allowed the Belgrade a break in the fourth set, It served to put his triumph on track and meet in the quarterfinals with the Russian Andrey Rublev.

After the match was suspended this Sunday when the Serbian had managed to prevail in two ‘tiebreaks’ in which he had to raise three set balls in the first round and with another tiebreaker in the second, the Serbian reached the restart with a foot and a half in eighth, but his rival had shown to be capable of making things difficult for him.

The start of the third set was very similar to the previous day, with both tennis players showing great confidence with their services, without giving up break balls and setting the pace based on direct kicks. A total of 33 was achieved by the Pole to 18 by the Serbian, who only conceded two break balls in the match, both in the twelfth game to close the gap.

In the fourth set, once again both tennis players were accurate with their serves, barely showing fragility and extending the equality with which the match started on Sunday. Until in the seventh game a successful ‘Nole’ built his first ‘break’ of the match, an advantage that he did not miss to end up closing the duel 6-4.

Djokovic, in the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the fourteenth time, will face Rublev, the seventh seed, for a place in the semifinals on Tuesday. The Russian reached the quarterfinals after beating Kazakh Alexander Bublik in five sets, 7-5, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-7 (5) and 6-4, despite 39 direct aces from his rival, who nevertheless committed 14 double faults.
