Tennis player Novak Djokovic, world number 1 for 291 weeks, believes he is in a “good position” to break the record of permanence as leader of the classification, held by the Swiss Roger Federer with 310.
“My wish is to be the first, with the greatest number of weeks in history, and I will work to make that come true,” said Djokovic. in an interview published this Wednesday by the Serbian sports daily Sportski zurnal.
To beat that mark, The Serbian tennis player must remain as ATP leader until March 8.
With everything, Djokovic recognizes that everything depends on his results and those of his most direct rivals, Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem, numbers two and three of the ATP, until the end of the year and at the Australian Open, in January.
Djokovic has an advantage of almost 2,000 points against Nadal.
The Serbian tennis player announced that he will not play the 1,000 Masters in Paris, from November 2 to 8, but he will play the Vienna Tournament, which begins this Saturday, as well as the London Masters, from November 15 to 22.
“I was not in Vienna last year and I can win up to 500 points, and in London many points are at stake”explained the tennis player.
“The most important thing for me now is to score as many points as I can. I want to make a considerable difference before the start of next season. Obviously that's my plan, “said Djokovic.
“If in Vienna I go to the quarterfinals, I will have secured first place (in the ATP). If that is fulfilled, I will have a guaranteed objective for this year, “he said.
