Diego López is Benjamin Button

The years go by, the players go by and Diego López remains unchanged. The Espanyol goalkeeper, at 39 years of age, shows that he still has rope for a while and everything is linked to the parakeet club. The blue and white entity, this summer, did not bet on strengthening its goal (it was not raised either) since Diego López is untouchable, offers guarantees and is blindly trusted. It is his sixth season in the goal of Espanyol and, game by game, it shows that to see the relief it will still be necessary to wait.

Diego López has also started the season at an exceptional level. Against Osasuna and Villarreal he kept his goal to zero and it was not until matchday 3, against Mallorca, when he received his first goal this League. Of course, he had interventions that prevented the defeat against the vermilion team from being more bulky. The goalkeeper is indisputable under the sticks and has the confidence of Vicente Moreno and the sports management. Age is simply a number that does not affect a Diego López that in the day to day shows the illusion of a child. Hence, the need to look for goalkeepers in the transfer market does not exist. Oier Olazábal, who arrived last season, lives in his shadow and he has only been able to play five games with the blue and white jersey: three in the Copa del Rey and two in the Second Division against Cartagena and Ponferradina.

It is at Espanyol where Diego López has put down more roots because he had never before enjoyed six consecutive seasons with minutes at a football club. At Villarreal, for example, he was five (from 2007 to 2012). After a year in the Second Division, the Galician goalkeeper is happy after returning to the First Division with Espanyol and seeks to continue breaking records. A few months after his 40th birthday (he was born on November 3, 1981), he will be among the oldest goalkeepers in LaLiga history. And it adds 178 Blue and White matches. Only he knows where his roof is.
