Did Jason Roy deserve another chance at the T20 World Cup 2022 Squad?

32- Year- Old Right Handed English opener Jason Roy has been dropped from England’s upcoming World Cup T20 squad. Not just from the World Cup, he has been cut off from the T20 series against Pakistan. Recently played against India and South Africa, Jason Roy has only made 76 runs in total (4,0,27,8,20,17 in the last six matches) which clearly shows him being out of his usual form.

Previously this year Jason was bought by Gujarat Titans with a base price of INR 2 Crore during the auction. But later this opener batsman pulled himself out of the league stating he wanted to spend time with his family. Later he stepped on the field to play for Oval Invincibles Men in The Hundred Tournament, scoring 51 runs in 51 balls in 6 matches.

Roy probably would have been given another chance to make it to England’s final T20 World Cup squad but his performance for the Oval Invincible left no chances for a different outcome.

“I understand why they’ve done it, but personally I would’ve stuck with Jason Roy for the T20 World Cup. You don’t want an opening batter walking out at the MCG not having done it before. You want that solidity at the top and that experience of what it takes on such a big occasion. He has had some horrendous dismissals, I get that. He’s hardly been able to score a run this summer,” Kevin Pietersen said on Betway Insider.

“I think after the World Cup it might have been time to get rid of him, particularly if he didn’t perform. But I’m disappointed for him because he’s had a brilliant England career and he deserved another chance at a major event,” he added further.

Roy is a vital player of the Oval invincible but his performance this year was below average. He started the league with three ducks in four innings and even missed the final two matches of this 2022 season due to lower back stiffness.

There were rumors surrounding Phil Salt being a replacement for Jason Roy in the T20 World Cup which is now confirmed. England released their final squad for the WC, scheduled to take place next month in Australia. Phil Salt had played alongside Jason Roy in the Netherlands. 26-year-old opener Phil made his T20I debut last year and currently holds a strike rate of 150.

Besides Phil, another suggested replacement for Jason was Will Smeed. This 20-year-old right-handed player made his t20 debut in 2020 and remains the first player to score a 100 (101*) in The Hundred league for Birmingham Phoenix against Southern Brave. Along with Phil, Alex Hales also made a comeback to the England team, for the first time since 2019. Hales was then suspended for failing a test for recreational drug use.

Before the World Cup T20 kicks off in October, the England team is going to fly off to Pakistan. England is scheduled to play the first out of seven upcoming matches against Pakistan on September 20 in Karachi.

In the World Cup T20, England begins the championship matches by playing against Afghanistan on October 22 in Optus Stadium, Perth.

Recently the Official England Cricket Team revealed the T20 World Cup Squad and the selected cricketers and reserves are; Jos Buttler(Captain), Moeen Ali, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.
