Deschamps will continue as France coach until 2026

PARIS, 7 Jan. (dpa/EP) –

The coach Didier Deschamps has renewed his contract as coach of France, runner-up in the world, until 2026, the French Football Federation (FFF) announced this Saturday.

“The French Football Federation and Noël Le Graët, its president, are pleased to announce the extension of Didier Deschamps’ contract at the helm of the French national team until June 2026,” a statement said.

The new contract covers Euro 2024 in Germany and the next 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. His previous agreement had expired last month after the World Cup in Qatar, where France lost the final on penalties against Argentina.

Deschamps, 54, won the World Cup as a player in 1998 and has led ‘Les Bleus’ since 2012; As a coach, he won the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2021 League of Nations, and led the team to the finals of Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup. He has won 89 of the 139 games he has coached, with 28 draws and 22 defeats.

Le Graet said after the World Cup final that he would leave it up to Deschamps to decide whether he wanted to continue. “Didier has done his job well, he has priority, and I think we will agree to continue,” Le Graet said then.
