Dennis González and Mireia Hernández take bronze in the Fukuoka mixed freestyle duet

MADRID, 22 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish swimmers Dennis González and Mireia Hernández won this Saturday –at dawn– the bronze medal in the free mixed duet artistic swimming event during the World Championship, which is being held in Fukuoka (Japan).

After being second in the preliminary the previous day, González and Hernández were third in the final with 183.4207 points. Two failures in his routine caused two ‘base marks’ by the jury, according to the 24.5500 that they had as a difficulty card. Even so, the Spanish couple completed an outstanding exercise that was worth metal.

“It has been a very complicated championship and today has been a hard day, but we have gone to do our best version. Very proud with the routine, the work and the result. Medals in the World Series; in Poland [Juegos Europeos] we beat Italy, who had beaten Russia, and that’s saying a lot. It’s incredible,” Hernández told the Royal Spanish Swimming Federation (RFEN).

In addition, the Catalan swimmer dedicated this new medal to her loved ones. “To my family and especially my best friend’s mother, she is not having the best time. I hope she recovers soon and that she continues to fight as she has until now,” she commented when leaving the pool.

The gold went to the Chinese Wentao Cheng and Haoyu Shi, thanks to their 225.1020 points, and the silver went to the Mexicans Itzamary González and Diego Villalobos, according to their 192.5500 points. Behind the Spanish, the fourth position finally went to the Colombians Jennifer Cerquera and Gustavo Sánchez (170.2208 points).

At the rate of three golds, one silver and three bronzes, the Spanish artistic swimming delegation closed this World Championship with an outstanding metal harvest. In this way, he equaled the seven medals obtained during the 2009 World Championship held in Rome (Italy), although this time with two more golds in his final baggage.
