Hours after being eliminated in the Champions League quarterfinals against Lyon (1-3), the Manchester City midfielder K
Evin de Bruyne was named Premier League player of the season this Sunday, in which he scored 13 goals and gave 20 assists (equaling in this section the record achieved by former Arsenal and Barcelona Thierry Henry in a single season, 2002-03).
As was the case in 2018-19 and 2017-18, the Premier Player of the Year award was not awarded to a member of the champion team. Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk won it last season and the winger of the 'reds' Mohamed Salah in the previous one, although in both cases it was Pep Guardiola's City that conquered the Premier.
De Bruyne, 29 and third with his national team at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, is the third Belgian footballer in the last nine seasons to win the award after Vincent Kompany and the now Madrid player Eden Hazard.
The winner was decided through public votes on the EA Sports website combined with those of the 20 Premier League club captains and a panel of soccer experts. De Bruyne beat Liverpool trio Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jordan Henderson and Sadio Mané, Southampton striker Danny Ings, Leicester forward Jamie Vardy and Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope.
