Davidovich surprises Dimitrov and will play his first final in Monte Carlo

MADRID, 16 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Spanish tennis player Alejandro Davidovich has reached the final of the Monte Carlo tournament (Monaco), the third ATP Masters 1,000 of the season, after resisting and beating Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov this Saturday (6-4, 6-7(2), 6- 3), and will fight for his first individual title on the circuit.

The man from Malaga, number 46 in the ATP ranking and who was able to knock out Serbian Novak Djokovic in the second round, once again exhibited his best level to leave the number 29 in the ATP ranking out of the fight for the Monegasque trophy, which had him against the ropes in an exciting third set on the clay of the Principality.

Before, in the first set, Davidovich emerged victorious from the powerful exchange of blows between the two contenders, very solid both with the serve and from the back of the court. The Spaniard took advantage of the only possibility of breaking offered by the Bulgarian, in the third game, to win the sleeve.

Already in the second, equality was once again the dominant trend. Dimitrov went ahead 0-2, but the man from Malaga responded with a counterbreak to link four wins. With 5-4 and service to close the duel, the Spaniard gave in and brought his rival back into the fight. Dimitrov did not waste the opportunity and sealed another break that sent the fight to the ‘tiebreak’, where he would manage to tie the contest.

Things did not look too good for Davidovich in the third set, in which, again, his rival stood out 0-2 and had four opportunities to break his serve again. However, he reacted in time to win five consecutive games and close, in the ninth and on his second match point, the clash in two hours and 44 minutes of play.

With this, he will play against the German Alexander Zverev or the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas his first final of a Masters 1,000 and the third consecutive of 2022 for a Spaniard, after Rafa Nadal played the Indian Wells -with defeat against the American Taylor Fritz- and Carlos Alcaraz did the same in Miami -with a victory against the Norwegian Casper Ruud-.
