David Castro prevails in the Huatulco Triathlon World Cup

MADRID, 18 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish triathlete David Castro has achieved victory this morning in the second test of the Triathlon World Cup, held in Huatulco (Mexico), in which the Canadian Tyler Mislawchuk has been imposed on the sprint.

The man from Albacete, who this month was proclaimed European champion after beating the British Jonathan Brownlee in a very tight final sprint, repeated the play in the Mexican town, where he beat the North American by a single second to cross the finish line first with a time of 54 :13, all in one race under the sprint format. The local Aram Peñaflor closed the podium, third, four seconds behind the winner.

Mislawchuk was the first to get out of the water after covering 750 meters through the Pacific Ocean, followed closely by a group that included Castro and Genís Grau, also a Spaniard, who won Huatulco in 2022. They themselves commanded the first of the two groups that formed in the segment of 20 kilometers on the bicycle.

The Canadian made a flawless transition to the foot race, and only 5,000 meters separated him from victory; Only Castro, Mislawchuk, Grau and the Spanish Alberto González were able to keep up with him, although in the end only the Albacete and the Mexican stayed with him. With 50 meters to go, Castro started the breakaway and no one could catch him. Grau was fourth, David Cantero fifth and González, seventh.

“The conditions and the weather are very tough, and the first position here today is very important for the Olympic qualification. Winning the European Championship was very important for me. Today I just enjoyed the race and the crowd,” said Castro, who occupies third place in the Spanish Olympic classification, after the race.
