The president of the Spanish Badminton Federation (FESBA), David Cabello, will not stand for re-election in office, held since December 2004, in the elections to be held before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he announced to Europa Press the president himself.
“A cycle of success has been accomplished in a sport that was previously unknown and is now very popular. I think it is time to step aside so that a new team that prepares next year's World Cups with sufficient margin”, the jienense director said in statements to Europa Press.
David Cabello is thus serving a 21-year cycle at FESBA, which he reached in 1999 as Director of High Performance and in 2004 he was elected president. Under his mandate, badminton has gone from 1,200 to 30,000 licenses thanks to programs such as 'Fly with badminton', 'Badminton +' and 'Wanted champion', and the Madrid World Cup was played in 2006.
They have left, among others, the Olympic champion, three-time world champion and quadruple European champion Carolina Marín, who will seek to revalidate in Tokyo the gold of Rio de Janeiro after overcoming a serious injury to his right knee.
David Cabello, who will remain on the Board of Directors of the International Badminton Federation (BWF) until at least 2021, has requested the advancement of the elections to the presidency of the FESBA to the Higher Sports Council (CSD) with the objective that The next team can organize the World and Veterans World Championships in Huelva in 2021.
