The Spanish-Colombian rider David Alonso (GasGas) won the Moto3 race of the Catalan Grand Prix this Sunday, the eleventh round of the Motorcycle World Championship, ahead of the Spanish Jaume Masià (Honda) and José Antonio Rueda (KTM), by virtue of a multiple overtaking in the final curve of the last lap of the circuit.
Thus, the Montmeló track (Barcelona) experienced an exciting test in the small displacement of the World Championship, with a comeback from twelfth place on the grid, although without leading role for the Spanish Iván Ortolá (KTM) despite starting from pole position . And it is that a good handful of pilots, at times of up to a fortnight, played for the podium in a race full of alternations.
On lap 1 the Turkish Deniz Öncü (KTM) took the lead, forcing Masià and the rest of the candidates to respond to his movement. Not surprisingly, Alonso took first place on lap 5, almost at the same time that the Italian Filippo Farioli (KTM) crashed. Despite the investigation of the circuit commissioner in that incident, there was nothing punishable.
Daniel Holgado (KTM) from Alicante took the lead on lap 7, but Öncü took it from him the following lap and remained in front of the pack for a short time. From lap 13, Holgado returned to the most advanced place and again the Turk snatched it from him, starring in a head-to-head that added guests for the outcome.
Masià appeared on the scene again and there was a touch of motorcycles between Holgado and Öncü, without scratches for anyone. At the start of lap 17, the penultimate of the 18 scheduled, Holgado took the lead and led Alonso to his slipstream. The Spanish-Colombian led the finish line of the final turn to Montmeló, but immediately gave up that position.
After one last heart-stopping lap, Holgado crashed at turn 10 while trying to overtake. And just four corners later, with the checkered flag already in sight, Öncü threw the also Spanish David Muñoz (KTM) in a maneuver that benefited Alonso’s victory and was quickly sanctioned by the organization of the event.
The Turk had taken third place that way, behind Masià, but received a ‘double long lap penalty’ that was equivalent to six seconds behind. Due to this, the young José Antonio Rueda finally won the third position; first podium finish in his professional career for this 17-year-old from Seville.
