Dani Carvajal’s controversial statement to Pedro Sánchez in Moncloa shakes social networks

After their visit to Zarzuela, where they were received by the king and queen and their daughters, the players of the Spanish Men’s Football Team headed to Moncloa. Álvaro Morata, as captain, was the first to greet the President of the Government with the Euro Cup in hand. He was followed by Dani Carvajal, another of the four captains of the Spanish team.

The Real Madrid full-back avoided looking at the socialist leader and briefly shook hands with the politician. A gesture that has been widely commented on on social media. The rest of the players then passed by. The parade of footballers went on as normal, although Joselu Mato, Carvajal’s brother-in-law and teammate, followed the same line.

The President of the Government dedicated a few words to all the players for their achievement: “Thank you for having given the best version of Spain. For the comebacks, for the team spirit. There are times when the best team doesn’t win, but this time the national team played like a dream. I imagine you had a long night, but allow me to flatter you. You are the first national team with 4 European Cups and with a full house of victories against the great European powers.”

And the socialist concluded: “In historical terms, what has happened is very important. No one has won four Euro Cups, nor seven games… And not against any national team. Thank you for giving the best version of Spain. The problem, Mr. coach, is that we want more.”

As for Carvajal, precisely during this same Euro Cup and following Kylian Mbappé’s political statements, he said: “I, as a player, stay away from my political ideology. I have done so throughout my career and I will continue to do so. In the end, each person’s vote is private. If he thinks it is the right thing to do and what he should do, go ahead,” he said, after his (now) Real Madrid teammate encouraged the French left to vote to stop the advance of the far right in his country.

“The only thing I want and desire is for us to have a prosperous country, a country in which we feel safe, a country in which unemployment is reduced and a country in which we are all happy and can go around the world with our flag held high boasting that we have, if not the best, one of the best countries in the world,” Carvajal also said a few weeks ago.
