Cruyff and the Federation of Ecuador terminate contract without additional payments

Spanish-Dutch coach Jordi Cruyff and the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) rescinded this Wednesday the contract they signed in January this year, until July 2022, after reaching an agreement without economic damage to the parties.

A source from the FEF confirmed to Efe that an agreement had been reached whereby the parties would not pay anything additional and added that Cruyff and his coaching staff barely managed to collect the approximate of one and a half to two months of their projected salary.

In Ecuadorian media the information had circulated that the technician would have so far collected $ 900,000, information for the first time discarded by a member of the Federation. According to the agreement reached, the technician has renounced the more than almost five months of salary that was due to him, defaults due to lack of liquidity in the FEF, in exchange for the termination of their contract. A condition that will also be applicable to its coaching staff, a part of which is currently in Ecuador.

Cruyff joined Ecuador earlier this year to implement an ambitious project at the forefront of national footballBut he stepped aside after an institutional crisis in the Federation, the coronavirus pandemic and the resignation last week of Antonio Cordón as technical director.

The coach was barely able to physically work with his pupilsBecause when the clubs arrived they were in the middle of the preseason and others were beginning the play-off phase of the Copa Libertadores de América. AND when he was preparing to provide the summoned list with a view to the debut in the South American qualifiers for the World Cup of Qatar 2022, all activities were suspended due to the spread of the coronavirus. In March, Cruyff traveled to Spain to meet his family and was due to return to Ecuador last Thursday.

However, as a result of the institutional crisis that was shaking the FEF by a censure motion that deposed its presidentFrancisco Egas, a decision not recognized by FIFA and Conmebol, and the economic effects of the pandemic and Cordón's resignation, asked for a few days to think about his future, which “upset” the FEF president.

At the beginning of the week, the parties reached an agreement to start talks with a view to the separation, which this Wednesday seems to have paid off, according to the sources consulted. Some members of the FEF have expressed their wish that the new technician be from Ecuador or some American country, considering that the European options are not viable both logistically and economically.
