We’re back together, and it feels amazing. Former pitcher Craig Breslow received the Boston Red Sox’s offer on Tuesday, meaning the team no longer needs a head of baseball operations, according to the Boston Globe.

The Chicago Cubs, where the former deputy general manager played two stints and won the 2013 World Series, will see him back in the lineup.

Breslow is playing alongside Alex Cora, a former colleague of his from the Red Sox. He received another promotion in 2021, to assistant general manager.

Before being elevated to director of pitching in 2020, Breslow worked with the Cubs for four seasons, starting as director for strategic initiatives in 2019.

In that same year, Breslow’s title was expanded to include special assistant Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer.

Breslow transformed the Cubs into a team that established its own strong bullpen during that time, moving away from a team that depended on trades and free agency to acquire starting pitchers. He worked remotely from Newton, Massachusetts, for the most part.

According to insiders, Craig Breslow, a former official with the Chicago Cubs, might be joining the Red Sox in Boston again as their head of baseball operations.

During his tenure with the Cubs, former pitcher Breslow contributed to reviving the team’s pitching development.

Since September, the Red Sox are looking for a replacement, and Breslow has become the clear favorite.

Although it’s unclear if Breslow is going to have a deputy, a number of the Red Sox’s current assistant general managers are still in the running.

One apparent favorite has been removed from consideration as the Red Sox reduce the number of contenders for the position of head of baseball operations.

According to sources who spoke with MassLive on Tuesday, Boston notified Twins General Manager Thad Levine forward Monday he would not be moving on to the next round of interviews.

Levine, ranked No. 2 in Minnesota under President the Baseball Operations Derek Falvey, was thought to be among the front-runners early in the process and was one of seven individuals who were confirmed to have interviewed for the job.

Rather, the Red Sox are taking a different approach, ruling out a serious contender and raising the possibility that assistant general manager Eddie Romero or assistant general manager Craig Breslow of the Cubs may end up in the position.

Levine was removed from consideration Monday night, as first reported by Jeremy Nygaard of Twins Daily.

After serving as the Rangers’ deputy general manager from 2005 to 2016, the 51-year-old joined the Twins in November 2016 and has been Falvey’s second-in-command ever since.

Breslow, 43, had been vice president of pitching and assistant general manager for the Cubs.

He began working for Chicago’s front office around January 2019 and rose through the ranks, first holding the position of director of strategic planning for baseball operations.

His connections to New England go beyond his time spent playing in the Red Sox because he was born in Connecticut and went to Yale.

Chaim Bloom, the Red Sox’s chief baseball officer, was let go in September after four seasons during which the team finished last three times, including in 2023.

In recent weeks, Boston is said to have conducted talks with a number of well-known candidates in an attempt to find a replacement for Bloom, including former Miami Marlins general manager Kim Ng and general manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks Mike Hazen.

Breslow transformed the Cubs into a team that established its own strong bullpen during that time, moving away from a team that depended on trades and free agency to acquire starting pitchers. He worked remotely from Newton, Massachusetts, for the most part.

Breslow’s new position won’t need him to travel far, and he will be joining a Boston operation he should be somewhat familiar with as well as a room full of people he knows well—many of them will remember him from his second tenure on the team from 2012 to 2015.
