Villarreal midfielder Francis Coquelin suffers a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, the Castellón club confirmed this Monday, for which he will have to undergo surgery and will miss the remainder of the season.
“After the medical tests carried out last night at the IMED Valencia Hospital, it is confirmed that the Villarreal player Francis Coquelin suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the match against FC Barcelona, corresponding to matchday 21 of LaLiga Santander” , the entity said in a statement.
The Frenchman had to leave the Estadio de la Cerámica field on a stretcher in the 36th minute of the first half, to the applause of his fans, while he covered his face with a towel, revealing the seriousness of the injury. In his place came the Nigerian Samu Chukwueze.
Villarreal also reported that the French midfielder will undergo surgery “in the coming days.” “Unfortunately, the remainder of this season will be lost. The club will soon give more details about the operation,” he said.
