The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) copied the measure adopted by UEFA a few months ago and decided to eliminate the double value of away goals from its competitions. This was announced this Thursday by Conmebol itself through an official statement. Starting in 2022, all goals will have the same value in all South American competitions.
The ‘away goal’ benefited the teams that in a tie managed to score on their opponent’s field of play. At the time of a tiebreaker, if there were equal points and goal difference, the team that had scored the most goals as a visitor would go to the next round. The idea was born to reward the visitor who did not jump out of the house to defend himself.

It was first UEFA that decided to eliminate this rule from the current 2021-22 season. It is no longer valid in this edition of the European club competitions. This Thursday, thus, Conmebol announced that it will also adopt this measure.
