Commander S. Kam Curl responds to the trade of Chase Young and Montez Sweat.
Safety Kamren Curl arrived in Washington in 2020, the same year as defensive end Chase Young and head coach Ron Rivera.
On Tuesday, Young and 2019 first-round pick Montez Sweat were traded to the San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears, respectively.
Curl, who like Young and Sweat, is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
However, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported Monday that the Commanders weren’t shopping Curl and preferred to retain him via a long-term extension.
Then, at 2:47 p.m. ET, 10 minutes after Ian Rapoport of NFL Network broke the news of Young’s trade to the 49ers, Curl had the following response. What does this mean? Absolutely nothing.
Will Curl miss his teammates? Sure. But life in the NFL moves fast, and the next move from Curl will likely be a contract extension, or Washington could choose to use the franchise tag if no deal is reached.

And Rivera, with a new owner in town, could soon be on his way out. Curl knows Washington values him, and NFL players all understand the league is a business, first and foremost.

The 49ers added Young, a former first-round pick for a simple third-round selection, and one could be thinking that the Commanders could have asked for more.
But with Young coming to the end of his deal as the Commanders didn’t pick up his fifth-year option, it was likely ‘get what you can for him now’, or ‘lose him to free agency next season’.
Washington, if it really wanted to get rid of Young, didn’t have much bargaining power with the 49ers as Shanahan’s team knew that the Commanders were sellers, so they offered a lesser pick.
