Columbia tries to raise awareness about caring for ecosystems

The design and sports equipment brand specializing in adventure activities and on the Columbia mountain has drawn attention to the importance of the population taking care of ecosystems, coinciding this Sunday with the celebration of World Environment Day.

Human waste is a more serious problem for everyone every day. It is estimated that there are about 50,000 million plastic particles in the seas and oceans. For this reason, Columbia has promoted a waste collection activity with a group of volunteers in Monte del Pardo in Madrid, coordinated by Yolanda Oreja, SEO Bird Life monitor.

The volunteers did not expect to find the amount of waste that was in the area. “It’s full of things, butts, plastic, glasses… so there are two things, lack of information, we don’t know how to recycle, but we also don’t care about anything, we throw everything away,” reflected Sara Postigo, head of the Nota Bene agency. .

The ‘garbage’ increases year by year. World production has gone from 2.3 million tons in 1950 to 407 million in 2015. There is more and more scientific evidence that identifies garbage as another agent of global change.

Some brands and companies are especially sensitive to this problem, as in the case of Columbia. Lucía Muñoz, Marketing coordinator of Columbia Sportswear Company, is clear that brands have the “responsibility of minimizing the environmental impact” in all their production processes.

“We must bear in mind that in the last 150 years the plastic generated by humans has been in landfills and in natural environments,” Muñoz pointed out. Nearly 80 percent of the garbage that ends up in the ocean comes from land sources.
