Christian Eriksen: “I was dead for five minutes”

MADRID, 4 One. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Danish footballer Christian Eriksen has expressed his appreciation for the support he has received during his recovery after the cardiac arrest suffered at the last European Championship, where he admitted that he was “dead for five minutes”.

Eriksen, who went into cardiorespiratory arrest at one point in the game, was treated on the grass by the stadium toilets, who tried to revive him for almost 15 minutes. His teammates surrounded him to prevent cameras from filming the former Inter Milan footballer.

In addition, stadium workers covered the player with large towels, who was “taken to the hospital” and was soon stabilized. The 29-year-old player cannot play in Italian football as he is wearing an ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator), a contraindicated device for playing football in Italian Serie A.

This situation led Eriksen and Inter Milan to mutually agree to terminate their contract just three weeks ago. The Dane joined the ‘Nerazzurri’ in January 2020 after seven years in the Premier League with Tottenham.

“It was strange because I didn’t expect people to send flowers because I was dead for five minutes, but it was very special,” Eriksen told Danish television DR. “It was quite extraordinary but very grateful for everyone’s love,” he added.

“People still write to me. I have thanked the people I have met in person, I have thanked the doctors, my teammates and their families in person. But to all the fans who have sent thousands of letters, emails and flowers , or who have approached me on the street in Italy and Denmark, I thank you all for the support I received from around the world. They have helped me, “he said.

Meanwhile, Eriksen’s agent, Martin Schoots, said on Tuesday that playing in England would be a homecoming for the Dane. “Playing in England again would be absolutely like coming home for Chris and his family,” Schoots told the BBC.

“Christian Eriksen has been treated exceptionally well by the British public, not only for his best football skills, but also for his human values, modesty and altruism,” said his representative.
