“Chiqui, I have to love you a lot to make this journey”

It took the streaming platform three weeks to release the second chapter of the documentary Sancho case after the Thai court’s verdict was read on August 29: life imprisonment. This Friday, HBO launched a new episode in which it covers the entire judicial process and speaks, once again, with Rudolph Sancho.

Rodolfo Sancho has gone on the defensive, at least, in the new episode of the ‘Sancho Case’: “If you are not a father, what do you know?” The second chapter of this documentary series once again has Daniel Sancho’s father as the protagonist as he tries to reconstruct the first steps of that macabre August 2, 2023 on the island of Koh Pha Ngan.

“It’s been long, psychologically, emotionally, physically hard. I’ve been beaten up beyond words. I’m destroyed right now,” says the actor from La Señora. The format is like an interrogation: the lens is on the other side of a table and Rodolfo explains how he has experienced the case, appearing defeated. “I think putting myself in an active position has helped me psychologically because you put yourself in a position of struggle instead of a passive one. It’s a defence mechanism. There are people who will understand it and there are people who won’t understand it,” he defends himself. Then, Rodolfo Sancho looks at the camera and asks the viewer with a half-smile: “If you find yourself in a situation like this, what do you do?” “If you’re not a father, how do you know what it feels like to be a father?”

The chapter also includes statements from Darling Arrieta and almost all of the victim’s family. The Edwins talk about those first moments when their brother did not respond. The most surprising thing is that they recreate the WhatsApp messages exchanged by Daniel Sancho and his victim. “Chiqui, I have to love you a lot to make this journey“said Sancho Gracia’s grandson. They also show the exchange of messages between Rodolfo Sancho’s son and the Arrietas.

Daniel Sancho thought he could return to Spain in a year

Ramón Abarca, a representative from Efe, had travelled to Ko Pha Ngan and sat him down with Daniel Sancho shortly after he confessed. It was then that he confessed that he was in a glass cage and that Edwin Arrieta wanted to be his lover. He also assured the journalist who is taking part in the documentary that The Colombian doctor had threatened his family, but that was not published because there was no evidence. As were other details, such as that the police had taken him to dinner at the restaurant of the luxurious Anantara hotel or that Daniel Sancho thought he could return to Spain much earlier, in just one year. Two proofs, for Ramón Abarca, that The police would have manipulated Daniel Sancho into confessing and being able to close the case as soon as possible.

Juan Gonzalo Ospina, The Arrieta family lawyer, another of those interviewed in the series, reconstructs Daniel Sancho’s confession with videos never seen in their entirety of the first moments of interrogation. Ospina remembers that when the actor’s son arrived at the police station, the police were already waiting for him. Max still saves the appearance of the deputy commander of the Thai police for future episodes.

Many interviews have been conducted before the verdict was made public.

The chapter begins by reviewing what happened on August 2, 2023 on the island of Koh Panghan, Thailand, when Daniel killed Edwin Arrieta and dismembered his body into 14 pieces to distribute them throughout the island. They warn: “This documentary series has been recorded throughout the trial against Daniel Sancho for the premeditated murder of Edwin Arrieta in Thailand. Many interviews have been conducted before the sentence was made public. The statements made, both personal and subjective, by each of the interviewees are not the responsibility of the producer or the broadcaster.”

He also remembers Rodolfo Sancho’s first statements, in which he recounted how Daniel had told him that he was detained in Thailand and what had happened. The new interviews with the actor reveal what his role has been during these months and how he has endured so much suffering: “August 29. It’s a lot of waiting, a lot of patience, but in part we have asked for it because there is a lot of material, a lot of information and we want to draw very good conclusions from everything that has happened, which is a lot. It’s not easy and we want it to be well explained,” explains Daniel’s father at the beginning of the chapter. “It’s been long, emotionally and psychologically hard. I’ve taken indescribable beatings. I’m devastated right now, honestly.”he confesses.

The protagonist of Sea of plastic He says that, as soon as he spoke to Daniel and learned about the situation, he contacted a lawyer friend who referred him to other experts in International Law. After doing his own research, he decided to hire the services of the Balfagón-Chipirrás law firm and Marcos García-Montes. Together they began to work on Daniel’s defense: “Having the information, knowing things, calms me down to a certain point because otherwise the wait is very long. Putting myself in an active position has helped me, you put yourself in a position of struggle. I think that the passive position is harder.”he says. “Taking this position has been a defense mechanism. There are people who will understand it and people who won’t. It will always be like this. I arrive at the hearings every day with everything there, knowing what we are going to do, the questions to ask, the witnesses who are coming… Arriving without knowing anything would scare me even more,” he confesses.

Rodolfo is aware of all the criticism he has received but he is clear that, as a father, he should act as he has done: “If you find yourself in a situation like that, what would you do? In the end, you would do your thing. Those of us who are parents know the difference between being a parent and not being one. It’s very easy to criticize if you’re not one. What do you know about what it feels like to be a parent? In the end, the important thing is to be true to yourself. I wouldn’t have been able to live without all this.”he confesses.
