In 2015, Carlos III faced great controversy over the so-called ‘black spider memos’, letters he wrote to ministers over the years, allegedly trying to pressure them in one way or another about the war in Iraq, between other issues. However, he argued that he was only raising “issues of public interest and trying to find practical ways to deal with the problems.”

More recent were the “money bags”, specifically £2.6 million, which he accepted as a “donation” of the former Prime Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, which had Carlos in the spotlight. But Clarence House, his official residence, insisted the donation was handled properly.

Last Monday, September 12, Carlos III gave his first speech before the members of the British Parliament to whom he promised to reign “disinterestedly” as his mother did, and with respect “for constitutional principles”. Now, everything remains to be seen.
