Changes in the ATP ranking: Nadal will retain its 9,850 points

It's official: ATP introduces changes in the circuit ranking system. The men's world ranking, which remains frozen since last March 16 due to the coronavirus pandemic, it will return to a course after the agreement reached between the four Grand Slams, the ITF and the ATP itself. Once the action on the tracks resumes (August 14 with the Washington ATP 500), the ranking will be recalculated with the 18 best results of each player for a period of 22 months, that is, the records obtained between March 2019 and December 2020.

At the time prior to these modifications, the ATP had the best 18 results for each player for 52 weeks, so before the forced stoppage of the circuit due to the pandemic the range has been extended. As the agency has announced in its official statement, one of the main objectives of these changes is “provide stability to players who cannot or prefer not to compete in 2020 for health or safety reasons. “This benefits some of the best racquets on the circuit, as men like Rafael Nadal they are still undecided on whether to participate in the most important tournaments, such as the case of the US Open. Thanks to the new ATP ranking, the manacorense takes air to make his calendar in the rest of the course, since no matter what happens you will not lose 5,360 points (owns a total of 9,850) that he defended between Roland Garros and US Open of 2019. In case of obtaining better results, you can only add, so the new system favors those players who defended more points.

In addition, the ATP has also included a special assumption: If a player participates twice in the same tournament during the mentioned 22 months, only the one with the best result will count for the ranking. In the event that the pandemic forced to stop the competition again, the circuit would consider the possibility of making further adjustments to the rankings. However, it should be noted that the annual classification known as 'Race', which gives access to the ATP Masters Finals (November 15 to 22), It is eliminated, so you just The eight best rackets in the ranking will attend the teachers tournament (except Roger Federer, due to injury). The road map is ready and it only remains to see if the great protagonists of this sport are for the work of returning to the slopes to put on a show. Meanwhile, the world throne still belongs to Novak Djokovic …
