The president of UEFA, the Slovenian Aleksander Ceferin, announced this Thursday that he will leave his current position at the head of the governing body of European football in 2027, the date on which his mandate would end and despite the modification of the statutes that would allow him to remain for four more years if he were re-elected.
“I decided about six months ago that I will no longer run in 2027. The reason is that, after some time, every organization needs fresh blood, but above all because I have been away from my family for seven years,” Ceferin declared at a conference press release after the UEFA Congress held in Paris.
The leader assured that, “honestly”, he is “tired of Covid, of two wars, of meaningless projects of the so-called Super Leagues and of self-proclaimed moral authorities who are only moral until it comes to their personal interest.”
In any case, Ceferin will leave after having achieved the statutory change that would have allowed him to run “legally” to be re-elected “until 2031.” “Congress decided to vote for change and that's how serious organizations work,” he said.
