Catalog of controversial penalties at the Bernabéu: three whistles, two VAR interventions…

Real Madrid-Elche has had penalties of all colors. De Burgos Bengoetxea pointed out three, which remained in two. One to Vinicius who should not have whistled due to a prior foul by Kroos on Pere Milla and that Benzema later failed; another to Hazard that he sanctioned in the first instance but that he revoked after going to the video arbitration monitor and a third, the one that Modric transformed, which he pointed out by Pere Milla after going back to the monitor at the request of the VAR, a job that Estrada Fernández performed. The Real Madrid players demanded another due to a lack of Verdú that De Burgos assessed on the pitch.

Penalty from Palacios to Vinicius (32′)

The first penalty was in the 32nd minute for Vinicius’s takedown, but in the previous shot of that play there was a foul by Kroos on Pere Milla that the franjiverdes players protested. Iturralde González supported the thesis of the players from Elche at Carrusel Deportivo. “The penalty is very clear, there is no doubt. It is a clear penalty. What happens is that in the recovery of the ball Toni Kroos takes the ball through a foul. He doesn’t touch the ball, Pere Milla is covering him, hits him in the lower left leg and recovers the ball from a foul. The VAR does not warn De Burgos, he does not see it and they call the penalty. But they had to have whistled the fault in the recovery“, Iturralde explained in the broadcast of the match on Cadena SER.

Penalty against Hazard revoked by the VAR (53′)

De Burgos Bengoetxea awarded another penalty against Real Madrid at the start of the second half. It was in the 53rd minute, in a fall by Hazard in the ‘sandwich’ area between Diego González and Palacios. But nevertheless, De Burgos reviewed his decision and revoked the penalty after seeing the play on the VAR monitor at the request of Estrada Fernández.

The referee whistles for a push and not subsequent contact with the defender. That is why the VAR tells him to go see him since there is no such push. Analyze the first move”, explains Iturralde González.

Penalty for Pere Milla’s hand called at the request of the VAR (81′)

It is a clumsiness of Pere Milla, who jumps with open arms. Can’t jump with arms outstretched. It is not a warning because the ball does not go to goal, but it is clear penalty“, commented Iturralde González in Carousel.

Verdú’s hand in the area protested by the Madrid players (86′)

“This hand is different. The referee sees it and considers it to be in a natural position,” explains Iturralde.
