Casillas confirms that he will not stand for election to the RFEF

It is official. Iker Casillas will not appear for the elections to the Royal Spanish Football Federation. The former captain of the Red and still Porto's goalkeeper has confirmed it through a statement issued on his social networks where he ensures that “the main reason” for his decision “is the exceptional social, economic and health situation that our country is suffering”.

Last February the goalkeeper announced that he would attend the elections to be president of the Federation and thus unseat the current maximum president, Luis Rubiales, who at the moment has no rival candidate in elections that could take place on August 17.

“Elections take a back seat”, he points out Casillas in your note. “I think it is time to add and not divide, because football and society need it,” adds the former Madrid player, who in May 2019 suffered a heart attack that has so far prevented him from resuming his football career.

“In the sports and federative field, we must focus on how to help players, clubs, competitions and elections only wear down and make us focus our efforts on something that today is not essential,” he says. Casillas, which does not rule out retaking the electoral career in the future.

“It is not a closed door for the future, I wanted a fair, transparent and truly participatory electoral process, seeking the best for Spanish football and this time I believe that it has not opted for it”, criticizes Casillas, “I hope that in next elections can take place, with me or with other candidates ”, he adds.

“I place myself at the disposal of the CSD, RFEF, LaLiga, AFE and their respective presidents for what they may need from me and I will be delighted to be able to collaborate for the good of soccer. Today we must all be together to get ahead “, closes Casillas.
