Carreño will seek his first Masters 1,000 against Hurkacz

MADRID, 14 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Spanish tennis player Pablo Carreño has reached the final of the Montreal tournament (Canada), sixth Masters 1,000 of the season, after beating British Daniel Evans in the semifinals this morning (7-5, 6-7(7), 6- 2), and will seek his first title in the category against the Polish Hubert Hurkacz.

“In a difficult year for me, I have had an incredible level and today I was able to compete well again. It is very important to win games and here I am, happy to be in the final,” he said after a duel of two hours and 59 minutes of play. .

In the battle between two unseeded players, Evans made the Asturian, number 23 in the world, give up his first set of the entire tournament, all after a first set in which Carreño, comfortable from the back of the court, asserted his two breaks in front of one of his opponent.

The British reacted in the second round, where he went up to the net to put a 4-1 lead, and although the Spaniard managed to draw (4-4) and enjoyed a break point at 5-5, Evans ended up balance the contest in the ‘tiebreak’.

Carreño recovered the pulse in the third set keeping his service intact and winning the last four games, data that allowed him to finish the match with 41 winning shots and a 79 percent accuracy (49-62) in points with his first serve .

In this way, Carreño will play his second final of the season after the one in Barcelona and the first in the Masters 1,000 category of his career against the Pole Hubert Hurkacz, number 10 in the ATP ranking and eighth seed, who won in the other semifinal Norwegian Casper Ruud (5-7, 6-3, 6-2).

After his defeats in the first round in Indian Wells, Rio de Janeiro, Madrid or Roland Garros, or being forced to withdraw at the Wimbledon premiere, Carreño is finally looking for glory in Montreal. “It’s probably one of the worst years of my career, without great results. I made the final in Barcelona and the semifinals in Bastad. But now, without knowing why, this week the level has been incredible. I feel excited,” he confessed.
