Carreño gives in to a Sinner with seven lives in a tough goodbye to Miami

MADRID, 28 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Pablo Carreño received a tough farewell this Sunday in the Miami tournament, the second Masters 1,000 of the season, when he fell (5-7, 7-5, 7-5) against the Italian Jack Sinner, in a match where he had five balls to get into eighths.

The Asturian took control and was ahead against his young -but better positioned in the ranking– rival, and had the rest five times, one in the second set and four in the same game of the third, the option to sign a serious win. Sinner grew up before the precipice after more than three hours and will face Australian Nick Kyrgios in the round of 16.

Carreño took the initiative on the scoreboard from the first set, with an early ‘break’ and a 3-0 lead. The Italian reacted and even had the service to win, but the Spaniard presented his bet with three games in a row and 5-7. Sinner, a finalist last year in Miami, seemed unhinged at times but got up when he was in serious danger.

The serve saved the Italian from more than one trouble, even on the first match point in the tenth game. The Spaniard did not manage the stick, lost the next 11 points and was forced into a third set. After the break, Carreño did return whole, again willing to take the initiative and achieved the ‘break’ and 3-5.

The Spaniard served to win, but once again Sinner stopped making mistakes and took the level of number 11 in the world, without missing one for 4-5. Carreño had the rest again, this time another four match points, at least two clear ones to finish off the job, but the Italian proved to have many lives, cold blood and quality.

The second duel between the two was once again tight, like in 2020 in Rotterdam when the Spaniard won, but Sinner showed that he is now one of the best in the world and takes advantage of his opportunities. Carreño took a dramatic defeat when he came without wins from Indian Wells and the young transalpine repeats the Californian appointment against Kyrgios, although then he could not play due to illness.
