Carreño falls short of epic and leaves Gijón without Spaniards

Carballés also said goodbye in Florence

MADRID, 14 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Pablo Carreño yielded this Friday against the Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech after more than three hours of battle in the Gijón ATP tournament, who was left without his idol in an intense and epic tie-break of the third set, while the also Spanish Roberto Carballés said goodbye to the tournament in Florence (Italy).

Carreño had nine match points to reach the semi-finals at home, but Rinderknech had an incredible clash needing six match points (4-6, 6-3, 7-6(16)). The Spaniard took the lead in a solid first set, but the Frenchman was improving.

Above all, the Frenchman’s serve became a difficult weapon to face, with Carreño soon giving up his without being able to avoid the third set. Both remained firm with the passing of the games until the Spaniard had his first two match points, the rest in the tenth game, which was resolved by Rinderknech.

Thus, the quarterfinal duel reached one of the most epic sudden deaths of the season. Carreño had it in his hand before, but he also had to save Rinderknech’s options with quality in the backhand crosscourt while the public went crazy. In the end, the Frenchman spoiled the party, even apologized to the stands and the appointment in Gijón was left without his idol, the last Spaniard in the running.

Meanwhile, at the ATP 250 event in Florence, Carballés could not (6-4, 6-2) with the Swedish Mikael Ymer. After his great comeback against local favorite Matteo Berrettini, the Canarian relented in his attempt to reach the first ATP semi-final of the year.

The first quarter could have fallen from either side, with a couple of ‘break’ exchanges but one more blow from the Swede to score the sleeve to the rest. Later, Carballés also lost his serve early and this time there was no reaction, forceful Ymer to leave the Italian tournament without Spanish representation.
