Carreño advances and Verdasco cannot with Isner’s 30 aces

The Spanish Pablo Carreño, seventeenth in the world ranking, defeated the German Oscar Otte 6-2, 6-4 at dawn this Tuesday and qualified for the round of 16 of the Mexican Tennis Open.

With a couple of early service breaks in both sets, 70 per cent effectiveness on first serves and cool blood to save all three break points against, Carreño won in one hour and 16 minutes on the first day of the tournament, with the ATP 500 category.

Olympic medalist in Tokyo 2020, the Spaniard imposed conditions with good performance in his turns of service and accuracy with his two-handed backhand. In the phase of the 16 best, he will face the winner between the American Marco Girón, 59 on the world list, and the Australian John Millman (80).

This Monday, in the game on the central court, which inaugurated the new stadium in Acapulco, the Spanish Fernando Verdasco gave a great demonstration against the American John Isner, who needed 30 aces and came from behind to win 7-5, 6-7(4), 6-7(3) in the best duel of the start of the championship.

Verdasco, 152 in the world, recalled his best moments in which he came to be among the 10 best in the world, and forced Isner to be precise with his best weapon, the serve. The Spaniard let go of a lead in the third set and was eliminated by losing sudden death.

Isner broke in the twelfth game to take the first game, but Verdasco shone with good returns and with a good backhand to force the ‘tie break’, which he won 7-4.

In the third set, the Spaniard broke Isner’s serve in the second game; he had a 4-1 lead, but he let the rival grow, who escaped two points for the match, tied the duel and won the tiebreaker.

Isner, twenty-third on the world list, will face in the round of 16 the best between the British Cameron Norrie, twelfth in the world, and the German Daniel Altmaier.

In other results of the first day, American Taylor Frtiz defeated Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-3Serbian Dusan Lajovic, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 against American Sebastian Korda and German Peter Gojowczyk, 6-4, 6-4 against American Brandon Nakashima.

This morning the German Alexander Zverev, second favorite, will face the American Jenson Brooksby and the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov to the American Stefan Koslov.
