Carlos Verona achieves his first victory in Vaujany and Roglic storms the Dauphiné

The Spanish Carlos Verona takes the penultimate stage and the Slovenian Primoz Roglic rises to the lead

BARCELONA, 11 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish cyclist Carlos Verona (Movistar) conquered this Saturday the seventh and penultimate stage of the Critérium del Dauphiné, a 134.8-kilometre route between Saint-Chaffrey and Vaujany, while the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) rose to the lead in the absence one day to go.

The 29-year-old from Madrid was the strongest on the climb to Vaujany, where he left all his pursuers behind, especially the Frenchman Kenny Elissonde (Trek-Segafredo), who gradually took off in the last section of the stage. But the platoon’s attacks jeopardized the victory and lowered the difference to 30 seconds before the final battle.

With two kilometers remaining, the Slovenian Roglic and the Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) put the turbo on and went after the Spaniard, but the one from San Lorenzo del Escorial did not give up. Thus, Roglic was finally 13 seconds behind a full Verona in the ascent of Vaujany, with the first ramps at 10 percent, for which he achieved his first victory as a professional cyclist.

Despite Roglic’s second place on the penultimate day, the 32-year-old cyclist made a big splash on the queen stage to become the provisional leader of the Critérium del Dauphiné. In this line, his teammate Wout van Aert ended his fight for the general by falling behind, in the same way as the Italian Mattia Cattaneo (Quick-Step), leaders of the race to date.

In this provisional general classification, the Slovenian now has a margin of 44 seconds over his teammate Vingegaard, while the Australian Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citröen Team), fourth at the finish line, rises to third position with one day remaining. This Sunday the eighth and final stage of the Critérium del Dauphiné is held, between the towns of Saint-Alban-Leysse and Plateau de Salaison.
