Carlos Rodríguez conquers his first stage lap in the Tour de Romandie

MADRID, 28 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish cyclist Carlos Rodríguez (INEOS Grenadiers) has been proclaimed winner of the 77th edition of the Tour de Romandie after defending his lead in the fifth and final stage, of 150.8 kilometers with start and finish in the Swiss city of Vernier and in which the Frenchman Dorian Godon (Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale) took a final partial victory.

The 23-year-old from Granada, who had snatched the leader’s jersey from his compatriot Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) at the end of the fourth stage, resisted the Barcelonan’s attempt to regain first place 24 kilometers from the finish line and confirmed his first final success in a stage tour, which also offers confidence ahead of the Tour de France.

In this way, he succeeds the British Adam Yates in the list of winners and becomes the third Spaniard to win the event held in the French-speaking region of Switzerland, after Francisco Galdós, in 1975, and Abraham Olano, in 2010.

With a time of 15:44:46, Rodríguez led the general classification with seven seconds ahead of the Russian Aleksandr Vlasov (BORA-hansgrohe) and nine seconds ahead of the German Florian Lipowitz (BORA-hansgrohe). Ayuso was finally fifth, 27 seconds behind the Andalusian runner.

For his part, the Frenchman Dorian Godon (Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale) achieved the last stage victory by winning the sprint against the Italian Simone Consonni (Lidl-Trek) and the New Zealander Dion Smith (Intermarché-Wanty).
