Corberán, who arrived at Huddersfield in July 2020, was one step away from the Premier after losing in the decisive match against Nottingham Forest at Wembley (1-0).
The news of his resignation has taken his board and the sports director, Leigh Bromby, by surprise, who assured in a statement that they have had to accept his departure, but that it comes with a “disappointing timing”.
“It is with deep sadness that we have to accept the departure of Carlos. He was a very important part of our fantastic season, but in the last few hours he has come to talk to us and has made it clear that he does not believe he can continue at the club,” he said. Bromby. “The timing is disappointing with our preparation for next season already underway,” he lamented. Danny Schofield will take charge of Huddersfield in what will be his first experience as manager.
For his part, Corberán said goodbye to the club and its fans in a letter that began as follows: “A day has come that I will surely remember for the rest of my life. I am no longer coach of Huddersfield and I say goodbye to all of you with the open heart”.
The Valencian coach explained that it is a “difficult but well thought out” decision and taken “from a deep affection” towards the English club.
“There are times when the honest thing to do is step aside in a friendly way, seeking the best for both parties,” explained Corberán, since, as he stated in the letter, he only understands his work “from the deepest commitment and maximum alignment with the club’s policy”.
In addition, Corbarán thanked the previous president, Phil Hodgkinson, the current president, Dean Hoyle, and the manager Leigh Bromby, responsible for his arrival at the club, in addition to the rest of his work team, players, and of course, to the fans.
“Huddersfield has a family in the stands and that is the club’s greatest treasure. Seeing you feel proud at the end of each game has been my greatest source of satisfaction,” said the 39-year-old coach, who assured that he will always be “one more Terrier “.
